ANALYZING THE IMPACT OF URBANIZATION ON THE PRESERVATION OF HISTORIC ARCHITECTURE: A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE

Abstract

Rapid urbanization has emerged as one of the most significant challenges to the preservation of historic architecture worldwide, often placing modernization pressures in direct conflict with cultural continuity and architectural authenticity. This study examines the global impact of urbanization on the preservation of historic architecture by integrating qualitative field observations, stakeholder interviews, and quantitative assessments across diverse geographical contexts. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research evaluates urbanization intensity, preservation challenges, architectural alterations, policy effectiveness, and socio-economic outcomes associated with heritage areas. The findings reveal that high levels of urban growth and globalization-driven development are strongly associated with material substitution, façade modification, and loss of visual integrity in historic urban landscapes. While adaptive reuse and heritage tourism generate measurable economic benefits, these gains are frequently accompanied by increased vulnerability of architectural authenticity when governance and community participation mechanisms are weak. The results further demonstrate that integrated preservation frameworks, particularly the Historic Urban Landscape approach, show greater potential for balancing development pressures with heritage conservation. Overall, the study highlights the necessity of dynamic, context-sensitive urban management strategies that reconcile economic growth with the long-term safeguarding of historic architectural identity. The research contributes to global heritage and urban studies by providing empirical evidence to inform sustainable policy, planning, and conservation practices in rapidly urbanizing cities.
